1. Who you are agreeing with
tiporsub ("tiporsub", "we", "us") is operated by Tip or Sub, of Chandler, AZ 85226, United States. These terms are a binding agreement between you and us. By creating an account, making a payment, or embedding our button on your site, you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use tiporsub.
Two different kinds of people use tiporsub, and different parts of these terms apply to each:
- Creators — people who sign up, get a page, and receive money.
- Supporters — people who tip a creator or subscribe to one. You do not need an account to be a supporter.
You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to be a creator. You must be at least 18 to be a supporter, or have the permission of a parent or guardian who accepts these terms on your behalf.
2. What tiporsub is
tiporsub gives a creator a page and an embeddable button so that supporters can send them money — either a one-off tip or a recurring monthly subscription.
We are a payment facilitation service, not a shop. When you tip a creator, you are making a voluntary payment to that creator. You are not buying a product from tiporsub, and in most cases you are not buying a product at all. If a creator promises something in return — early access, a mention, a file, a perk on a subscription tier — that promise is between you and the creator. We do not verify it, guarantee it, or deliver it.
We are not a bank, we do not offer credit, and money held by us does not earn interest for you. Card payments are processed by Stripe, not by us.
3. Creator accounts
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep it accurate.
- You are responsible for your password and for everything done through your account. Tell us promptly at support@tiporsub.com if you think someone else has access.
- One account per person or organisation. Do not open a second account to get around a suspension.
- Your handle (the
@namein your page address) is assigned on a first-come basis. We may reclaim a handle that impersonates someone, infringes a trade mark, is used to mislead, or has never been used on an account with no activity. - To receive money you must complete payout setup with Stripe. That means accepting the Stripe Connected Account Agreement directly with Stripe, and satisfying Stripe's identity checks. We cannot pay you until Stripe clears you, and Stripe's decision is Stripe's, not ours.
4. Supporters
You do not need an account to tip or subscribe. You will be asked for your card details by Stripe, and optionally for your name, email address and a message. Giving your name and email is optional on a one-off tip; an email address is required for a subscription, because it is how you manage or cancel it.
If you subscribe, we email you a link that lets you pause or cancel without a password. Keep that email, or request a fresh link at any time from Manage your support.
Anything you type in the message box may be shown publicly on the creator's page unless you choose otherwise at checkout. Do not put anything private in it.
5. Fees
Our fee is 4.5% of each payment. On top of that sits the card processing fee, currently 2.9% + $0.30 per payment, which is what the card networks and Stripe charge to move the money.
Supporters are offered a checkbox at checkout, ticked by default, that adds both fees to what they pay so the creator receives the full amount. If a supporter unticks it, the fees come out of the creator's share instead. The exact split is shown on screen before any payment is made, and again on the receipt.
We may change our fee. If we increase it, we will email creators at least 30 days before it takes effect, and the new rate will only apply to payments made after that date. Processing fees are set by Stripe and the card networks and can change without notice from us; the rate quoted at checkout is always the rate applied to that payment.
Currency conversion, unusual card types and cross-border payments can cost more to process than the quoted rate. We absorb that difference — it is never taken out of a creator's share after the fact.
6. Payouts and the clearing period
Here is exactly how money moves, because you should not have to guess:
- A supporter pays. The payment is collected by Stripe and lands in tiporsub's Stripe balance.
- The payment then clears for 7 days. During this period the creator's share is money we hold and owe to the creator. You can see every clearing payment and its exact release date in your dashboard from the moment it arrives.
- When the clearing period ends, the creator's share is transferred automatically to the creator's own connected Stripe account.
- From there, Stripe pays it out to the creator's bank on Stripe's payout schedule, which the creator controls in their Stripe dashboard.
The clearing period is a fixed, published waiting time — not a review, and not something we extend at will. We may hold a specific payment for longer than 7 days only where it has been refunded or disputed, where we are required to by law or by Stripe, or where an account is under investigation for a breach of section 9. If we hold a payment beyond its release date, we will tell the creator why.
We do not pay interest on funds during the clearing period. We do not lend or invest creator funds.
If a creator's account is closed, any cleared balance is transferred to them, less any amounts we are entitled to recover under section 7. We may withhold funds for as long as is reasonably needed to cover pending refunds or disputes.
7. Refunds, disputes and chargebacks
This is the part most worth reading carefully.
Refunds
Tips are voluntary payments and are not automatically refundable. If you want a refund, contact the creator first — it is their money. If you cannot reach them, or something has clearly gone wrong, email support@tiporsub.com within 60 days of the payment and we will look at it.
We will refund a payment without needing the creator's agreement where: the payment was made with a card used without its owner's permission; the payment was an obvious duplicate or an obvious mistake in amount; the creator's account is suspended for breaching section 9; or the law requires it. Otherwise, whether to refund is the creator's decision.
Refunds go back to the original card. Card processing fees on a refunded payment are generally not returned to us by Stripe, and we do not pass that cost on to the supporter.
Subscriptions
You can cancel or pause a subscription at any time, and cancelling stops all future charges. Cancelling does not refund the period you have already paid for, and part-months are not pro-rated. If you were charged after cancelling, that is a mistake on our side — tell us and we will refund it.
Where the money comes from
If a payment is refunded or disputed before it has been transferred to the creator, we simply do not transfer it. The creator sees it marked as withheld and receives nothing for that payment.
If a payment is refunded or disputed after it has been transferred, the amount has already reached the creator. In that case the creator owes it back, and you agree that we may recover it by reversing the transfer, by deducting it from payments still clearing, or by invoicing the creator if neither is possible. This applies to the refunded amount and to any fee the card networks charge us for the dispute.
Card disputes ("chargebacks") are decided by the supporter's bank and the card networks, not by us or by the creator. We will pass on any evidence a creator gives us, but we cannot overturn the decision.
8. Subscriptions
- Subscriptions renew automatically each month on the anniversary of the first payment until cancelled.
- We email a receipt for every renewal, with a link to manage or cancel.
- If a card is declined we will retry it and email the supporter. If it keeps failing, the subscription is cancelled.
- A creator may change what a tier costs or what it includes at any time. Changing the price does not change what existing supporters pay — you keep the price you signed up at for as long as your subscription runs. A new price applies only to people who subscribe after the change.
- If a creator closes their account or is suspended, active subscriptions to them are cancelled and no further charges are made.
9. Acceptable use
Do not use tiporsub to collect money for, or in connection with:
- anything illegal where you are, where we are, or where your supporters are;
- payments you are not entitled to receive — including using a card that is not yours, or processing payments on behalf of someone else without telling us;
- anything on Stripe's restricted businesses list, which applies to every account on tiporsub;
- impersonating a person, brand or organisation, or implying an endorsement you do not have;
- material that infringes someone else's copyright, trade mark or other rights;
- gambling, lotteries, raffles, prize draws or anything where a payment buys a chance to win;
- investment schemes, lending, debt collection, or anything that promises a financial return for a tip;
- hate speech, harassment, threats, or content that sexualises minors;
- selling regulated goods — firearms, drugs, prescription medicines, tobacco, alcohol without a licence;
- knowingly false statements to get money, including fake charity appeals or invented medical emergencies.
Also, please do not attack the service: no attempting to break authentication, no scraping at a rate that degrades it for others, no probing for vulnerabilities without telling us first (see Contact — we would genuinely rather hear from you), and no automated account creation.
If you are raising money for someone other than yourself, say so clearly on your page.
10. Your content
Your page, your words, your images — you keep every right you already had in them. You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, resize and transmit that content, purely so we can run the service and show your page to your supporters. That licence ends when you delete the content or close your account, except where we must keep records under section 11 or the law.
You confirm that you have the right to use everything you upload, including images of other people.
If you believe content on tiporsub infringes your copyright, email legal@tiporsub.com with the work concerned, the page in question, and a statement that you hold the rights. We will investigate and, where appropriate, remove it.
11. Tax
Creators are responsible for their own taxes. Money you receive through tiporsub is generally taxable income, and we do not withhold tax from it. We are not able to give you tax advice — please ask an accountant about your situation.
Because payouts are processed through Stripe, Stripe may be required to report your earnings to a tax authority and to issue you a tax form (in the United States, a 1099-K). That paperwork comes from Stripe, using the details you gave them.
Whether tips are taxable, and how, differs by country and can differ depending on whether anything was promised in return. Do not treat anything on this page as advice.
12. Suspension and closing your account
You can close your creator account at any time by emailing support@tiporsub.com from the address on the account. A person handles it and confirms when it is done. Closing cancels active subscriptions to you and stops your page accepting payments. Any cleared balance owed to you is transferred first. We keep payment records afterwards as described in our Privacy Policy, because tax and anti-fraud law requires it.
We may suspend or close an account, and refuse or reverse specific payments, if we reasonably believe there has been a breach of section 9, if Stripe or a card network requires it, if we are required to by law, or if leaving the account open would expose us or your supporters to fraud or loss.
Where we can, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Where the law or an ongoing investigation prevents that, we will tell you as much as we are allowed to. If we suspend an account, funds already cleared and owed to that creator are not forfeited to us — they are released once we are satisfied there is no outstanding liability, or refunded to supporters where the payments were fraudulent.
13. Changes to the service
We will keep improving tiporsub, which sometimes means changing or removing features. We will give at least 30 days' notice by email before a change that materially reduces what creators get, or that increases our fee. For changes to these terms, we will post the new version here with a new "last updated" date and email creators if the change is significant. Continuing to use tiporsub after a change takes effect means you accept it; if you do not, close your account.
14. Disclaimers
We work hard to keep tiporsub running, but we provide it "as is". We do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will meet any particular need. To the extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties.
We do not endorse any creator and we do not check what creators say about themselves or promise their supporters. We do not control Stripe, the card networks, or the banks, and we are not responsible for their decisions, outages or delays.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
15. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, neither party is liable to the other for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost goodwill or lost data, even if it was foreseeable.
Our total liability to you for any claim connected to tiporsub is limited to the greater of: (a) the fees we earned from your payments in the 6 months before the claim arose; or (b) US$100.
This limit does not apply to our obligation to pay a creator money that has cleared and is owed to them.
16. Indemnity
If someone brings a claim against us because of what you did on tiporsub — the content on your page, what you promised your supporters, your breach of section 9, or your failure to pay your taxes — you agree to cover our reasonable losses and legal costs arising from it. We will tell you promptly about any such claim and give you the chance to be involved in how it is handled.
17. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. The courts of Maricopa County, Arizona have exclusive jurisdiction, except that either of us may seek an injunction anywhere to protect intellectual property.
If you are a consumer resident in the EU, the UK or another place whose law gives you the right to bring a claim in your own local courts, this section does not take that right away.
Before starting formal proceedings, please email us. Almost everything is fixable in an email, and we would rather fix it than argue about it.
18. Odds and ends
- Whole agreement. These terms, plus our Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about tiporsub.
- Severability. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still stands.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce something straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
- Assignment. You may not transfer your account or these terms to someone else without our written consent. We may transfer them to a company that acquires our business, and will tell you if that happens.
- No partnership. Using tiporsub does not make you our employee, agent or partner.
- Force majeure. Neither of us is liable for a failure caused by something genuinely outside our control.
- Language. The English version of these terms is the one that governs.
